Is it possible to sign up for service online? I’m not really enthusiastic about giving my SS and other personal information to an 18 year old kid at a local TMO store.

You should be able to sign up for service through T-Mobile.com. Whether you purchase a device or just a SIM card to use with a device you already own. There should be an option to setup a new service when making that purchase. You should also be able to setup a new service through Customer Care as well.
