Question

T-Mobile selling app usage info

Do I really have to download some app to prevent T-Mobile from selling my app usage data?

No, you can request your personal data not to be shared/sold per TMO privacy policy:

That seems like a policy.  It mentions browser searches.  It does not mention phone app data. And don’t get me started on the number of hacks and the amount of spam/phishing things I and others on my account get that can only come from T-Mobile data.

Multiple articles say you need the “Magenta Ads Platform Choices App”.  Do I need this to try to keep my data secure?

I’m not sure I follow,

The TMO website and privacy policy is a clearly written document that details what TMO does with your personal data (name, address, email, phone, etc). It is posted on the website because it’s the same website you use to check your online account that has all of your personal data and most of your usage data as well. Are you not concerned about that?

What do you mean “spam phishing that can only come from T-Mobile data”? How do you know a spam email or text can only come from T-Mobile?

The app you referenced I’m not so sure who owns it, but T-Mobile privacy links to their advertising & analytics page where you can find a direct link to a mobile app that allows you to opt out. It is not the same one as the one you reference:

https://www.t-mobile.com/privacy-center/education-and-resources/advertising-analytics

Which points you to:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.DAA.appchoices

That’s the official supported app.

Targeted advertising is completely different than personal data. So you should opt out of both.
