This is my first phone change to a different manufacturer in nearly a decade - previously was with Blackberry to Blackberry, the Blackberry to OnePlus, then OnePlus to OnePlus, and all went pretty smoothly.

But now I’ve been given the option to either use T-Mobile’s instructions (Google backup) or Samsung Switch app.

Does it make a difference?

If you want to break texting, RCS, and cause yourself a ton of other issues.  Use Samsung’s SmartSwitch.  Otherwise, I would stick to Google’s Back-Up of your contacts only.  A fresh start is always the best way to get a smooth and trouble free experience with a new device.  If you really want your text messages.  Use something like SMS Back-Up and Restore from the PlayStore that does it the right way.  You will need to copy all of the files off of your old device that you want to keep and then copy them to your new device.
