RCS file size limitations

Userlevel 4

OnePlus 6T.

RCS is enabled in stock messenger.

File size is set to up to 10.24GB.

Video is only 70MB, but is "too large to send."

Have tried All Files size, original, and Best Available as well.

Best I can do is 720p at 20 sec.

Still compresses the file into less than 600KB.

What am I missing here?

Max is 100MB so you are good in that department.  Who are you sending to?  If their device doesn't support it then it will get compressed.  Keep in mind T-Mobile hasn't flipped the switch for "non"T-Mobile official devices just yet.

Test sent to myself and to a TMO S9.

Wonder why it can receive much larger files than it can send.

Userlevel 4

Advanced Messaging

I get that with UP1.0 100mb is Max, but why the compression to under 1mb?  Theoretically, a file at 110mb should compression to under 100mb.  Nonetheless, I don't understand the 10GB file receiving limit if sending is so much smaller.

a ticket number has been filed with network engineers however I've also been told that this is a known issue. So we may have to just wait this out.

Update.

RCS does not currently work on the 1+6T despite the update to UP1.0.

No ETA of resolution.

Confirmed by Tmo ToE and tech support.

Userlevel 4

After filing two tickets and having to check on them myself instead of being contacted by T-Mobile two Representatives gave me two different answers for the same two tickets.

the first one told me that engineering could not find a problem at all and that I should try my SIM card from my 6t in my Samsung s9. Problem with that is I don't own an s9 so not sure where that came from.

another representative told me that engineering had found no problems but suggested I contact my ISP. Problem with that is I don't have wireless service through my ISP just like I don't have internet services through T-Mobile. Also to add RCS works over Wi-Fi and cellular data so because I was not connected to Wi-Fi not exactly sure why my ISP would be to blame.

long and short of it I've been through about 7 reps so far to include team of experts and local tech support at the same call center as my team of experts as well as other tech support Representatives on other avenues of T-Mobile support.

so we're still at square one even if we might actually be negative square one at this point seeing how nobody I've talked to has any idea about what I'm talking about.

I can confirm that it's a mixed bag between T-Mobile 6t users as to whether or not RCS is working for them.

Other tried solutions.

Uninstalled and reinstalled carrier services from play store.

Reset messaging app, clearing all data and setting up again.

APN settings are correct.

No change.

Can tmo reset my UP/RCS profile?  (Not push an update) That seems to have worked for some.

I can see typing, delivered, read statuses.  Just cannot send any file near 1MB in size.  OMACP configuration has no messages.

So this explains why text messages (SMS style) are limited to 1000 characters? I thought MAX SIZE IM defaulted to 8192 in UP 1.0....

Userlevel 4

I'm reading reports from Reddit and the OnePlus Community app about RCS not working on the 6t. I don't know about any other device however it is strange that typing indicators as well as delivered and read statuses can be seen But the file size is severely limited.

Seriously like eight tickets later over the course of two weeks and no answer.

Userlevel 4

Not much of an update but I feel like I finally got a hold of somebody at my regional team of experts that knew what they were doing yet they were unable to fix the issue because long and short of it TMobile needs to go back and rewrite the update portion for RCS. We are not the only ones having this issue and a lot of Samsung S9 series users are also having the same file limitation problems as well as character count limitations.

There's no ETA on a fix because the whole thing has to be redone and OnePlus is about to come out with another incremental update soon and TMobile is about one month behind them and this rewrite will take even longer.

Hey, @snn555!

I was just about to start digging into this one and it sounds like you're working with MC who has an engineer looped in. Fingers crossed for some answers soon!!

Userlevel 4

yeah we've been passing along some messages along the way and after several tickets and all sorts of varied responses some more far-fetched than others I was able to get a hold of a seemingly intelligent individual in my regional call center unfortunately they needed to confer with someone else who would not be back for 3 days.

that time for call back which was scheduled earlier was today and unfortunately I did not get a phone call. So I'm hanging up the issue for now because there is no new information and nothing else I can add to help.

further information that this is not an isolated incident and seems to be widespread.

Userlevel 4

Well in a surprising turn of events OnePlus has requested some logs from me in regards to a post on the OnePlus forums.  Even though I have the T-Mobile variant (the global version does not have RCS) I'll send in the logs just in case T-Mobile and OnePlus are working together to fix the issue. I'll update if I get any response or if it yields any new information.

I noticed a few other things today while messing about with the settings. With Advanced messaging enabled there is a 1000 characterI limit.  at which point nothing else can be entered and you have to send and finish with another text. If I turn off Advanced messaging I can send an entire book. It is not broken up into multiple messages when the other party receives it no matter the carrier they are on or the device they are using. So in the interest of saving Time and frustration I have at this point disable Advanced messaging.

Userlevel 4

Can anyone confirm the proper settings?

Userlevel 4

Sorry I could not get all of them in the same screenshot so here are three more with all of them listed. Along with the default setting that the phone resets to each time the phone is restarted.

A new Reddit thread.

OnePlus 6T (T-Mobile) SMS Text / RCS Messaging Challenge after 9.0.4 OTA Update : oneplus

Userlevel 3

I just wanted to send an update out to everyone on this -- The T-Mobile OnePlus 6T supports RCS but not UP1 (with the current software) which in turn means that it can't send 100 MB files.

Userlevel 4

Yes I got some correspondence today from Mike c that stated that what you said is exactly the case. However The updates page probably needs to change its verbiage from RCS to Advanced messaging and explain the differences. However this does not explain the fact that any file under 10 megabytes is compressed to under 1MB. Also in my chat settings file sizes up to 10.24GB not MB can be accepted. This would be between two TMobile devices on Wi-Fi and LTE with the capability of advanced messaging.

OnePlus is also working on this issue.

So....it being a verbiage issue....are they chasing ghosts?

Userlevel 3

You're totally right on the verbiage! I believe that's also something Mike is working on but I'll double-check. Keep us updated if you hear anything else from OnePlus.

Userlevel 4

Mike said that the verbiage was technically correct. However we all understand how that can be confusing to someone not familiar with the different terms. OnePlus doesn't really have a dog in the fight because the global version doesn't have RCS so unless TMobile gets together with OnePlus that will not be rectified. Anyhow I've moved on to Android Messages.
