Is a full-price iPhone automatically unlocked?

I purchased an iPhone SE a few months ago as a backup (I have a penchant for destroying phones and needed a "spare" due to my frequent international travel).

I paid full retail price at a T-Mobile store in a shopping mall. The phone has never been activated (or even unwrapped/removed from packaging).

Is a phone purchased up-front automatically unlocked? I no longer need this phone and want to sell it on Craigslist or eBay. It would be nice to know if this is still locked to TMobile or can be used on any compatible network as-is. I don't want to remove it from original packaging just to type in an unlock code as this will reduce the sales price.

Thanks.

No it's not. You would need to put a Tmobile sim card in it to show usage to meet the requirements.

Unlock your mobile wireless device

Unlock eligibility for monthly phones, tablets, and mobile Internet devices

  • The device must have been active on the T-Mobile network for at least 40 days on the requesting line.

They are not unlocked. There are still a set of requirements to unlock them.
