T-Mobile, PLEASE DO NOT SHUT DOWN 2G! People may think it’s useless, but you need to THINK AGAIN!! Me (and many other people) still love to use 2G on older phones such as nokias. Also, many seniors use 2G on their flip phones and don’t want to upgrade to those crappy 4G flip phones or smartphones. Also, what if LTE or 5G fails? What will be the backup if it fails? It’s not just phones that use 2G, it’s also tracking devices, security systems, parking meters, cars, and other things that might not even be upgradable. It was fine when 3G shut down because everything that relied on it just downgraded to 2G and there’s actually much more room for 2G since 3G shut down. T-Mobiles 2G is one of the last (or last) GSM 1900 network and millions of phones will be useless when it shuts down. What if you’re in an area with poor LTE/5G coverage and need to make an important call? Or LTE/5G is acting up? What will you do? And back in 2016, T-Mobile was basically almost laughing at AT&T shutting down 2G, now look at them. They brought many AT&T customers to T-Mobile so they still can use 2G. Now what will those people do? You can put your SIM card in any T-Mobile/unlocked phone and still use it on 2G so you can use the phone YOU want to use; NOT a 4G phone! But if T-Mobile shut down 2G, you are forced to use either a crappy cheap flip phone that isn’t user friendly or an expensive smartphone you can’t afford and doesn’t fit in your pocket. If T-Mobile shuts down 2G, they’re greedy and inconsiderate because they force you to buy an expensive phone and don’t care about many security systems being useless which puts many people in danger. About tracking devices, what if people lose their pets or something else? The device will become a plastic decoration. If your smartphone breaks, it will cost at least $100 to fix it or for parts to fix it. However if you use an older phone on 2G, the phone itself can cost only around $5-10. 2G barely takes any room and there’s plenty of room for LTE and 5G so there’s no need to shut it down. So T-Mobile, please don’t be greedy and keep 2G alive!
EXACTLY! PREACH IT BROTHER! 2G shutting down means that not only phones, but car GPS tracking systems, and lots of M2M machines such as vending machines, parking meters, and IoT devices like alarm systems will be useless and there is A LOT of them that will be. I really really really really like my Nokia 3395 and I want to be able to use it for many more years and decades to come, and people around me constantly trying to tell me “2G is old” are those that like those stupid upgrades, T-Mobile CEO, if you said in 2016 that “whether it’s 2G or LTE, you guys will provide the best service” https://www.t-mobile.com/news/press/att-2g-iot-lifeline, THEN WHY ARE YOU GUYS EVEN PLANNING ON SHUTTING 2G DOWN???? I DON’T CARE IF THIS IS OLD INFO, THIS IS STILL RELEVANT BECAUSE THAT PAGE HAS NOT BEEN REMOVED YET!!!!!!
Yes, T-Mobile USA, you are probably THE LAST ones supporting 1900MHz GSM in this world, and one that actually allows people in the USA to use 2G GSM so PLEASE KEEP IT so our old Nokias and many other older 2G GSM phones do not become useless. How about I also state that incase LTE or 5G fail like
Yes, 2G better stay otherwise there may be a lot of lawsuits against T-Mobile for planning on shutting it down! Also yes, 2G will have to stay for probably like EVER in order to keep it’s customers happy and stay with the network. Where will those AT&T customers go when T-Mobile shuts down 2G since T-Mobile USA you guys transferred probably like 100s of thousands to your network in 2016! YOU KNOW WHAT T-MOBILE, I DO NOT CARE IF THIS UPSETS YOU BUT I WILL ACTIVATE MY NOKIA 3395 AND USE IT DAILY AND I WILL USE MY PERSONAL CELL PHONE LINE ON YOUR 2G NETWORK!!!!!
T-MOBILE USA, YOU GUYS ALSO STATED THAT YOU DON’T KNOW IF IT WILL BE A REALITY BY 2025 THAT ALL IOT OR MERCEDES BENZES WILL BE RUNNING ON 5G EITHER SO THAT IS PROOF THAT YOU BETTER NOT SHUT 2G DOWN!!!! https://www.t-mobile.com/news/business/t-mobile-and-deutsche-telekom-launch-t-iot
Eventually 2G will go the way of analog. At some point maintaining the 2G network will just cost more than it’s worth. They’re only able to jam a couple of GSM channels into the spaces around band-2 LTE signals. It’s a very unsatisfactory sort of GSM.

LET THEM KEEP 2G THAT WAY! I DO NOT CARE! I DO NOT WANT TO USE A CRAPPY LTE FLIP PHONE OR SMARTPHONE AT ALL!!!!!! Also, my Nokia 3395 gets really good service with T-Mobile! I don’t care what you tell me, I DO NOT support a phase-out of a network that forces people to upgrade to much crappier stuff.
No one understands how much I want to use “JUST” a Basic call and text phone and NOTHING ELSE on a daily basis! I DO NOT NEED A SMARTPHONE, PERIOD!!!!!!!
No one understands how much I want to use “JUST” a Nokia and NOTHING ELSE on a daily basis! I DO NOT NEED A SMARTPHONE, PERIOD!!!!!!!
EXACTY! T-Mobile should keep 2G so we can use the phones WE want to use and not what we are forced to use!

I hate this world of where we are almost forced to use a smartphone. T-Mobile MVNO doesn’t work well with my 3390, and doesn’t work well with my 1616-2c, and I AM PISSED THAT 2G ACTIVATIONS ARE BEING BLOCKED ON MANY MANY MANY MANY PHONES!!!!! This all really breaks my heart that we can’t use the phones that “WE” want as easily as like in many other countries where 2G is still around and will be for probably forever! It’s almost feels like I am having a forced breakup with my girlfriend. No, it really does feel that way because again “WE” absolutely love our little Nokias too.

Yeah, why does this country have to be so greedy when it comes to this stuff? It’s unfortunate that the last 2G network here doesn’t work well during these times because of disconnecting due to VoLTE nonsense and blocking 2G activations along with removing 64k support. It’s sad that the only “G” they care about these days is Grands in their pockets.

THEN THERE IS NO REASON TO SHUT IT DOWN!!!!! In Russia, they have a fully functioning 2G at it’s fullest capacity and 2G also there gets service better than 4GLTE, and I have seen MANY eBay listings in Russia or Greece where indoors 2G works PERFECTLY, and on YouTube people have all FULL bars on their old Nokia phones too. ALL listings I see have their Nokia 3310 or 3330s with 4 FULL bars! Also, there may most likely still be 900MHz spectrum too, and of course they aren’t trying to be greedy and disconnect all the networks! WHILE FOR SOME REASON ACCORDING TO SOMEONE ON THIS CHAT, 2G COSTS A LOT TO RUN!!!!!! I am not calling out anyone out loud BY THE WAY!!!!! NO WONDER WHY OUR 2G PHONES CAN’T EVEN WORK WELL AND THEY LOSE SERVICE MORE THAN THEY SHOULD. IT IS BECAUSE OF THIS “GREED” IN OUR COUNTRY.

Exactly. I also see eBay listings from china and they get full bars all the time. Cost should be nothing to them since they scam costumers with upgrading to VoLTE and all that nonsense. They’re just greedy and shut it down for money.

ALL other countries where 2G is active without a shutdown, and even in UK where they say they want to shut down 2G by 2033 which I HOPE DOES NOT HAPPEN BY THE WAY, BUT…. at least there, they at least allow activations there much easier than here in our country, and I am sure all of the 2G phones I see videos of there work better and have service even in the most rural parts of the country. While here where I live in southern FL, I live in a area where I have literally ZERO 2G or 4GLTE T-Mobile service and I AM NOT KIDDING!!!!! HOW COME 4GLTE DOESN’T EVEN WORK THAT GOOD BUT THEY DID REDUCE A NETWORK THAT WORKED BETTER AND STILL WORKS BETTER THAN LTE?

Why couldn’t T-Mobile just let us use our 2G phones normally? Like blocking activations and disconnecting? They are actually losing customers like that by not letting people use 2G in 2022.

That’s EXACTLY what I have been thinking about this entire time! While I am not neccesarily against 5G or LTE development, but do you know how much money ACTUALLY T-Mobile USA will make with the 2G activations they could and “SHOULD” start allowing again, and you know how many phones I will actually activate with T-Mobile’s network once they allow pretty much ANY 1900MHz 2G phone to work on their network. If T-Mobile ACTUALLY cares about money, they don’t have to worry about customers throwing away their 5G phones because that won’t happen BUT those people that like 5G can ALSO activate and use their 2G phone along-side their modern smartphone. Also, do you know that Nokia phones are actually “Normal” phones, these smartphones that we use ARE NOT “Normal phones”. I like 2G because with 2G it is possible for me to make a call anywhere I want and anytime I want, BUT with this Voice-Over LTE crap, it is nearly impossible to make a call on LTE when you are on 1 bar in a really bad service area like I am where even Verizon barely gets 2 bars of service on LTE.
My thinking is that T-Mobile here should just have kept 2G 850/1900MHz at the fullest capacity and NOT by pointlessly “reducing it” like they did. I know FOR SURE that back in the day before this “spectrum efficient” 2G operation that happened in 2016, these Nokias worked very very very very well anywhere you went no matter how rural you were. My co-worker told me his Blackberry would get service literally anywhere in my rural area back in the day but now I am sure even his blackberry will barely get a bar in the area if I try it out since 2G was reduced that much. Ok, so T-Mobile did reduce 2G down to ONLY the 1900MHz frequency because the LTE is 1900MHz and 2G network is 1900MHz and both can work fine together BUT WHY IS T-MOBILE STILL THINKING OF SHUTTING IT DOWN????? I DO NOT GET IT!!!!! THEY LITERALLY STATED THEY HAVE A “SPECTRUM EFFICIENT 2G GSM OPERATION” BACK IN 2016. I do actually care that T-Mobile was trying to free up the infrastructure a little bit but what bothers me the most is that they still think of turning off 2G even though it is “Spectrum Efficient” already for 6 years now. I know that T-Mobile used to have a date set of Dec. 31 2022 last year but they changed their mind and THANK GOODNESS that on their network evolution page they only state”
We’ve also shared that we plan to retire T-Mobile’s older GSM 2G network as well, but no date has been set. We will update this page with any addition information in the future.
Which them “later updating the page with additional information in the future” WILL NOT mean that they will set a date for a shutdown but they will update and explain about the 2G network and explain why they aren’t turning it off.
I will be filing lawsuits against T-Mobile USA IF THEY DARE to set a date for 2G retirement because them reducing 2G is bad enough already but them completely shutting it off when it is already reduced enough makes no good sense.
Yep. They’re losing out on a huge and growing user base. I agree. There are a lot of folks out there, younger and older, who are interested in 2g devices, and would like to use them as daily drivers. There’s a “vintage mobile phones” subreddit with a couple thousand members, and the same with “dumb phones”.
These newer, 4g dumb phones are “dumb-ish”, but they’re still not an original 2g dumb phone. T-Mobile could bring in a *lot* of very happy customers if they did what no one else is doing; let new and existing customers latch on, instead of kicking 2g cell phones off of their signal, or not allowing them to connect at all. T-Mobile can do this. I hope they do.
It’s unfair to force people off of perfectly good tech just for the sake of selling more 5g phones. 5g phones are great and everything, but let the hobbyists and digital minimalists have their own thing, you know? The horse and buggy Amish aren’t about to put Ferrari out of business, and 2g dumb phones are no threat to 5g. They’re totally different things. Just saying. Come on, T-Mobile? Can we please latch on? Please?

Right, they are losing out on a huge growing user base! There are many young people like me that would like to use an old 2G phone probably as their secondary phone if they want to get away from the social media once in a while, and it sucks so much that T-Mobile is being greedy and ruining their own business role with them making SIM cards to be VoiceOver LTE ONLY (even for many MVNOs), since T-Mobile stated in 2016 that they “understand” that for most business it is not cost effective to update the modules to LTE from 2G, THEN WHY NOT ALLOW NEW CUSTOMERS TO USE 2G AS WELL?
The new LTE devices are not dumb phones at all to me as they are “LTE” which means they can have a GPS system and a browser, and cost about a $100 sometimes too, while it’s okay that they exist, people can use them if they would like BUT they are still more expensive than the 2000s Nokias or 2010s Samsung flip phones you can find for $15 or less on eBay and while they are mostly untested phones, most of the time those phones just need to be charged or battery replaced which is easy as well to do and they will work fine and can last a lifetime!
Forcing new customers off of a network is SO UNFAIR!!!!!!! These old vintage early or later 1990s and 2000s Erricson world, Samsungs, and Nokias can still make calls and texts absolutely perfectly on the 2G network and THEY DO NOT impact 5G AT ALL!!!!!! These phones have not done anything to ruin the business to T-Mobile in fact, T-Mobile blocking these phones is ALREADY them ruining their business role and just like you said, Amish people or country-lovin’ people like me WILL NOT put 5G out of business, Ferrari or Lamborghini out of business either just because we don’t like them BUT WE DO NOT want to be forced to only use 5G or drive supercars. Right, those people including me that like to use 2G doesn’t mean we will put 5G down because in fact, we would like to use 5G BUT AT THE SAME TIME USE 2G. T-Mobile USA, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE add 32k and 64k support back to your newly manufactured SIM cards in the factory starting today!!!!!!!!

I agree completely, man. There’s no reason to not allow people back on. There’s clearly a huge demand. Just look at Reddit. I use a 5g smartphone. I love it. It keeps me connected, and it’s useful as heck. But I also want to be able to use my weird, old Blu Jenny TV. It’s so primitive there’s no wi-fi. It could be used to call people, though.
The signal’s still on. All they have to do is be a champ, and let new and existing customers lock on. Allow new accounts to dial in and use their old tech, and allow existing (but booted out) 2g customers to latch back on. That would be amazing.
just a tad bit of info..anything yall are saying in here is going to go nowhere..Admins/moderators for TMO employees in here and their job is to manage the site itself. anyone that would make such a decision does not venture into here.

That may be so… But I figured, at least something was said, you know? I called their customer service number yesterday, spoke to a guy, put in a suggestion that the company should allow 2g folks to connect again. I know it’s a small thing, but I figure, if this is something that I want and care about even a little, at least I said *something*. Heck, maybe someone will read this and listen. Or kick the idea up to corporate. At least we tried. 🌷 It’s better to try than to say nothing.
I am sorry for the bashing on you
lol you are absolutely right..all the VPs and such like to kick it in here for giggles. what ever was i thinking hahahahaha..
i wouldnt have wasted my time putting what i did as my signature if this were the case..common sense here sport. there is literally zero that anyone in here can do..and by zero i mean 0...as in nothing..maybe you would like to have one of those 2G devices unlocked perhaps..would you like to guess who in here can do that? if you guessed no one then hey..you’re starting to get it.
peer to peer site with Admins/Moderators to keep the site in order only..
Well, at least we tried. Imho it’s better to try than not, you know? Heck, maybe somone’ll kick the idea up to corporate. That’s the hope! At least we said something. 🌷

Again, sorry. I read your signature by the way
trying to save yall some grief and wasted time in here. if yall are wanting to get more info up the chain keep calling in and requesting it..THEY can add such requests in. in here not so much.
wish yall luck but usually when something like this gets decided on it will take a ship sinking sized iceburg to get this ship to debate turning.

Thank you for that and I am sorry for being rude to you BUT, I am just saying that discussions are discussions, forums are forums. Yeah, we will complain to corporate then but we will still be talking here about this kind of stuff! At least thanks for not bashing on us like you used to do!
My take is, even if all we can do is post here, at least we said something. There’s definitely a demand. I did try calling T-Mobile to put the idea in their heads, and maybe that suggestion will make its way up to a supervisor. Another possibility is just waiting for someone else (another company) to either let us back on or maybe someone will eventually invent a mobile 2g connectivity device, or something weird like that. I feel like T-Mobile’s our best shot, though.
Don’t despair. I do believe that someone, eventually, will listen, if not in this company, somewhere. For now, hold onto your old phone, be patient, and maybe they’ll listen. You never know.
