I just received the T-Mobile 5G Home Internet Gateway and can’t wait to return it to a local store. Upload and download speeds reached (*measued at intervals within a 24-hour period), as compared to what is advertised, was in fact, so far off it was a joke.
Did the reset a few times, removed the SIM card and placed it back in. Noteworthy, I have a 5G tower a short distance away from me directly to the North and the signal strength on the gateway, no matter where I placed it in my two-story house, showed good to very good signal from the 5G tower. The signal from the gateway was always excellent, no matter where I moved my main laptop around in my house.
Just an example on how bad (low) the speeds were was single digit Mbps average up and down and a few times there was no upload speed registering and one time the download speed was in the, UGH, Kbps. One test exhibited a much higher upload than download speed.
Maybe I got a defective unit or perhaps there are some serious problems going on at the 5G tower near me. I don’t have the patience to bother with the matter any further though.
I just wanted to give it a trial run and was hoping for the best. Verizon 5G Home Internet (which I read is much faster and more reliable) is not yet available in my area but when it is I will give that one a free trial run as I want to get away from the Comcast/Xfinity inability to work with long-time established/loyal customers and give them a good (afforadable) deal on Internet plans. I know there are a lot of Comcast haters out there but I do give them credit, at least out here by me, for being pretty reliable for service and speeds.

Before you give up, try adding a second network with the + at the bottom of the Network tab in the app. Set the frequency band to 2.4 GHz. Set security to WPA/WPA2. Try connecting your laptop to this network. If it works, make it a Hidden network. The main default network should work fine for most devices, but you’ll have the dedicated 2.4 GHz network for any devices that don’t like the default.
Thank for your reply, though I am not sure what you were referring to regarding “try adding a second network”. Anyways, I contacted T-mobile by landline and easily obtained a return authorization for the Gateway and was e-mailed a pre-paid UPS shipping label. Dropping it off at the local UPS store in a bit.
An very interesting note, the mice woman I had spoken with claimed that their 5G Internet service was actually not in my immediate area currently, even though the signal checker/Gateway placement video feature on the T-Mobile app clearly indicated otherwise.
I’m done with T-Mobile 5G Internet and will now simply have to wait patiently until their main competitor in the field, Verizon 5G Home Internet, is available by me and take that for a free trial run and hope for the best. Comcast, my current Internet Service Provider, is incredibly inflexible/stubborn on its Internet offers/deals, especially for long-time (loyal/well-established) customers like myself, which is a shame and a very bad business practice.
