Help! People can't hear me on the phone but I can hear them

This has been happening through multiple scenarios, all listed below:

  • Calling another user under the same T-Mobile family plan while walking outside - using airpods, using wired headphones, and regular/no headphones
  • Calling a Zoom conference dial-in while at home - using airpods, using wired headphones, and regular/no headphones

This is a new issue that just started happening about 3 weeks ago while walking outside, and just started happening with Zoom this week.

Are you sure you have not accidentally hit mute on your phone or the headphones? That would result in you hearing them, but they could not hear you.

Confirming I wasn’t muted - they would hear every 3rd or 4th word that I said.

Were you in a room or place that has a LOT of pipes or AC conduits in the walls or ceiling (like my water-closet or my daughter’s old dorm room)… or as we refer to it a Faraday Cage? Basically, lots of interference?

No - and I’ve been working from home from the same location for the past 5 months. This is a new and recent issue that only happens for some calls, but routinely happens for some calls outside and some calls in the space where I work from home, which is on the second floor and looks out to our deck.

I’m concerned this is either a larger issue with reception in my area, or something wrong with my phone.

Have you restarted your phone recently to re-associate with the towers? Have you recently downloaded an app that may be interfering with the phone app? Unfortunately, I’m not well versed with iPhones and am at a loss as to what else you can do except to check that your APN settings are correct.

Yes - I restarted my phone, and made sure there were no outstanding updates. 

This isn’t meant to be rude, but are you a real tech specialist at T-Mobile? Or a well-informed civilian? I haven’t used these forums before so if this is the extent of information I can get here, I will plan to call/visit T-Mo directly.
