New Sim card no signal

I was told my XR’s originally from Sprint needed a SIM card upgrade. I got two cards, which I put in two phones. Neither one can make a call now. 

I got a new card for my own phone, swapped it out and lost service. I put the old SIM back in and I’m back to normal.

Never saw an “activation” scenario in all the how-to I’ve been trying.

If it's a post paid plan you can sign into your account and activate the Sims from there.  If it's a prepaid plan you will need to call Tmobile to activate.
