Know that as per notice,

"Important information regarding Vietnam

As of January 13, 2015, data roaming access in Vietnam is blocked. At this time, access to voice calls and text messages (SMS/MMS) are allowed at standard international roaming rates. This was due to an independent move by the Vietnamese government that increased carriers' rates; T-Mobile is working on trying to get the rates back down."

Does anybody know if GPS works in VietNam? And if so, how could are the maps?

Will be using an iPhone6.

For example, prior to the current (fantastic t-mobile coverage in many countries), one could still turn off mobile data roaming and the GPS access still worked. I could download a route while on a wifi connection and then follow that route after leaving the hotel. This worked well  in UK, Sri Lanka, etc. Maps were more detailed in UK, but still serviceable in other countries. There was no data charge.

Has anybody tried this in VietNam under current conditions

We are traveling to VietNam in December and doubt if things will be resolved with the government by then. Would like to explore the options. Will be in Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, and Ho Chi Minh City.

It should work fine. It is impossible to block GPS.

This is indeed correct!

You aren't able to block GPS.

If you want to use maps in an area that does not have data coverage, you need to install preloaded maps, such as "Here Maps". Google Maps needs both GPS and a data connection.
