Are there equivalent short codes for the text messaging system that exist for the voice system? I've used the “**62” short code to send my calls to another device when my phone is off. It works great but my text messages are not forwarded. I'd like to get a similar function for TXT messages but thinking about it, I realize that SMS has no way of determining phone status. But I wondered if there were alternatives, for example forwarding all SMS messages to a second number. So are there short codes for features specific to SMS services?

Those are all voice system short codes. You dial them on your voice dialer. I was hoping for something specifically geared towards the SMS system.
