WHY IS BAND 66 FASTER THAN BAND 2 WHICH IS FASTER THAN BAND 71

Can anybody out there it T MO land explain why Band 66 is faster than Band 2 which is faster than Band 71?

 

I have noticed in my area which is Stayton/Aumsville Oregon area that the fastest I have seen on Band 66 is about 180mbps dn.

On band 2 the fastest is about 80mbps dn

On band 71 the fastest is about 42mbps dn

 

I am looking for some kind of technical reasons or limitations.

 

Thanks to anyone who can explain why this is.

There's a lot of factors.

high band vs low band.

High band should ALWAYS have faster speeds than low bands, but they do not have the building penetration like lowband.  Then you have to figure out what type of bandwidth.  5x5, 10x10, and such.

In Marion Co, OR, T-Mobile has 20 MHz of AWS-1 (band 4/66), 15 MHz of PCS (band 2/25), 6 MHz of 700 MHz (band 12) and 10 MHz of 600 MHz (band 71) (Downlink). Generally T-Mobile uses 5 MHz for HSPA+ and either has 5 MHz for GSM/EDGE or hides a GSM signal in the guard band of band 2 LTE. They seem to have been deploying LTE in band 71 as only 5x5 reserving the rest for 5G.

So, to answer your question, it all comes down to the bandwidth available to be deployed as LTE vs other uses. Your experience is consistent with AWS being 20x20 LTE, PCS Maybe 10x10 LTE and 5x5 HSPA+ and 5x5 deployment of band 71 LTE.

ANOTHER QUESTION DO YOU KNOW OF A WAY TO LOCK ON TO ONE BAND SO DOES NOT JUMP AROUND?  SOME KIND OF SETTING WITHIN THE PHONE OR SOME KIND OF SOFTWARE APP?

Many Samsung phones have a "secret" menu you access by dialing *#BAND#* or something like that. Other phones, not so much.

BTW, phones with Carrier Aggregation (CA) can combine the capabilities of two or more LTE bands.

I DID FIND THIS CALLED THE SERVICE CODE HIDDEN MENU  *#546368#*710#  WHICH I USED TO DISABLE THE MOISTURE PORT BECAUSE I WAS GETTING THE USB CHARGER PORT MOISTURE OR DEBRIES ERROR MESSAGE SO AT LEAST I COULD CHARGE MY PHONE.

That is exactly why Tidbits.  Bandwidth.  Also its an FDD not a TDD frequency meaning it does not share the same frequency for up/down traffic.  B2 has a smaller bandwidth and it shares the same frequency for data transmission.  b66 is on two separate bands or frequencies 1 for upstream data and 1 for downstream.

2 main factors, for B66/B2 vs. B71.

B66/B2/B25/B41 are 4x4 MIMO.  B71 is 2x2 MIMO

That means… for the same spectrum deployed, you’ll typically get ~½ of the throughput under similar conditions.

Eg.  Where I am:

B66 FDD 20x20 ~ 200Mbps/50Mbps

B2 FDD 15x15 ~150Mbps/35Mbps

B25 FDD 5x5  ~ 60Mbps/15Mbps

B71 FDD 10x10 ~60Mbps/15Mbps

B41 TDD 2xCA 20MHz (70/30) ~230Mbps/20Mbps

Speeds are typically ‘the same’ given the same amount of spectrum.  What differs is the amount of antenna / channels used.

That being said, ‘n71’ FDD 15x15 has given me up to 150Mbps/50Mbps 2x2 MIMO

and ‘n41’ TDD (70% DL/30% UL) 100MHz has given me ~1Gbps/50Mbps 4x4 MIMO.

 

Best overall… CA B66 + B2 + n41 ~ 1650Mbps/135Mbps.
