If you are only concerned about rebooting when the internet connection drops, plug it into a Keep Connect. It will power cycle the gateway whenever it detects a dropped internet connection. https://www.amazon.com/Connect-Monitors-Connectivity-Required-Necessary/dp/B07MCRQPCS/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3W0F353TP0YIY&keywords=keep+connect+router+wi-fi+reset+device&qid=1650303482&sprefix=keep+conn%2Caps%2C180&sr=8-3
I was having internet disconnects at least once a day. Purchased a WiFi reset device called Keep Connect. It pings Google I think on a regular basis and if it detects the internet is down it will power reset whatever is plugged into it. It will also email/text you every time it happens. For some strange reason I’ve only had it reset once in the last month since I installed it. Obviously its not a solution for the problem, but its a decent band aid.
No, different SSID on the router. Devices on the gateway can’t see devices connected to the router and vice versa. I could accomplish the same thing by using a guest network on the router but I get marginally faster speeds connected to the gateway and since I really don’t want to go to the trouble of completely shutting off the Wifi on the gateway this approach seems simpler. Also not a gamer and no port forwarding, so the double NAT thing doesn’t seem to pose a problem. That is of course until someone like yourself who very likely knows more about this than I do comes along and points out to me that I’m wrong. Sure wouldn’t be the first time.To the OP, sorry for hijacking your thread. Hopefully your PC is attached to a router and all you need to do is switch to the gateway’s 191.168.12.xx network and you should have access. If you don’t have a router attached to the gateway I’m at a loss as to where that other network is coming from.
I have a router plugged into my gateway. My 2 main computers, my printer and NAS are connected to the router. All other devices, cameras, streaming devices, phones, tablets, TVs etc are connected to the gateway. In my mind that separates the computers and NAS (which I don’t stream from) from all the devices I don’t really trust. I have a third computer which I rarely turn on which connects to the gateway should I ever need to access anything else including the gateway GUI. Seems to work fine for me.
iTinkeralot, It looks to me that he has a second DNS server pointed to 192.168.68.1. It that’s the case he’s likely not actually seeing the 102.168.12.1 DNS server. Far from an expert, but that’s what it looks like to me.
Do you have a router connected to your gateway? What are those 192.168.68.xx IP addresses? If you’re connected to a router which is giving out 192.168.68.xx IP addresses you will not be able to reach the gateway at 192.168.12.1.
My Synology NAS is connected to one of the Ethernet ports on the gateway and works fine. I don’t think the NAS has wireless capability so a direct connection is required.
Nope, can’t change it.
If you connect your devices to the gateway, either Wifi or ethernet they will receive 168.12. addresses. If you choose to add a router you can retain 168.1 addressing scheme for all devices connected to the router.
Its not that difficult. One of the more time consuming parts is trying to find the best location for the gateway. There is plenty of info available on how to do that. Set up is done via the app. Once you complete setup you will need to reconnect any devices to the new network. Things like your Roku and your phones. They will all require the new network name and password to connect. If you use your cable companies modem as a router as well it will be very similar. If you have a separate router, for simplicities sake it will be easier to use the T-Mobile gateway for wifi access and not try to connect a router. Also, since there is no contract you have nothing to lose by trying it. Get the gateway, set it up and try it out before you cancel your cable. That way you can be sure everything works to your satisfaction. BTW, I’m 74 but with an IT background, so its not all exactly new stuff for me. Any questions or if things don’t work as you’d hoped, just come back here and ask.
I too have a congestion problem. Great speeds at 5 AM, 10AM to 8 PM, not so much. What I don’t understand is why is a congestion problem our problem and not theirs. If they don’t have the infrastructure to support the customer base shouldn’t they be aware of the issue and do something to correct it? If the new gateway doesn’t do anything to improve the problem I’ll likely drop the service.
