You usually must get the phone unlocked by the carrier it is locked to. If the phone is locked to a carrier different from T-Mobile, including Mobile Virtual Network Operators {MVNO} such as Metro by T-Mobile, then you must complete your unlock THROUGH that carrier or MVNO . Catch is, you have to have an account on that carrier and have satisfied the unlock requirements, usually having used the phone 40 days, 60 days 6 months or 1 year with payments in good standing, no outstanding device financing, and of course, the phone must not be reported lost or stolen. If you purchased the phone locked from a third party, you will likely be unable to get it sim unlocked. If the phone is not lost or stolen and does not have outstanding financing, then you may be able to use a third party unlocking service to unlock your phone for a fee. That fee can be substantial depending upon what phone you were using, what carrier it was on and the third party unlocker’s fees and policies. O
Actually, the T-Mobile Cellspots should work with Mint Mobile connected phones, or any other T-Mobile MVNO. It turns out that others who responded are NOT Answering your question, but they are volonteering an important piece of information for you to consider. You cannot get a T-Mobile Cellspot from T-Mobile, unless your service is with T-Mobile, not Walmart Family Mobile or any of a number of T-Mobile connected MVNOs . You would have to be lucky enough to find one on Ebay or Craigslist to obtain it. If you walk into a home of a T-Mobile customer who is using a T-Mobile cellspot and you have a T-Mobile MVNO, your service will be superb , helped by the Cellspot.
I also use the Samsung Galaxy S8 Active and I have been searching for ways to get the latest security updates as well as updating from Android 8 to Android 9. Samsung Bixby even tries to prompt you to upgrade but it is not an option. My phone has Build R16NW.G892USQS5BSF2 but has Service Provider SW ver SAOMC_SM_G950U_OYN_XAA_0142 followed by 988a5b38325a495133 then XAA/XAA/SPR which I think is not only a Sprint Software but one designed for the Galaxy S8 non active version. I'm not sure how that would have been provided to the device. It will not update on over the air update. It would be awesome if T-Mobile were able to inform us how to update but I'm thinking we are locked out of support for updates . If anyone can give me or any of us a guide to manually update this software, it would be appreciated.
One thing to check is whether your phone is trying to connect to WI Fi. You can get this behavior if you have Wi Fi at your home and have set your phone up to connect to the Wi Fi then move to an area of the home where the Wi Fi is weak. Try disabling Wi Fi to see if this helps. It is not guaranteed. You can also experience this if you are in an area, especially indoors where you are only connecting on T-Mobile's LTE band 12 and the signal is weak. You might need to get a T-Mobile LTE Cellspot from Tech Support. There are two types, one that receives a weak signal and transmits it to another location within your home which then sends out a strong version of the LTE connection, then if you have home internet, there is a cellspot which harnesses your home internet to provide LTE coverage in your home as if it is a local area T-Mobile tower.
It is bad in a number of Ohio towns. My experience is that much of South Charleston, Ohio in Clark County along routes 41 and 42 and the Ohio to Erie bike trail and Van Wert Ohio along US highway 30 are dead sports. Band 71 has not arrived in most places in Ohio yet, I think it comes in 2020 when TV stations get moved to lower frequencies. I don't know if it will help much or not. Band 12 helped the area near Battelle Darby Creek Park between Columbus and London and some other areas near London Ohio with its deployment. It still does not do as well as AT&T or Verizon in many of the rural areas. Berlin Ohio is also dismal for coverage. It seemed to do well along I-70 including Springfield in my experience. I have no experience with Greenfield but I noticed it is along highway 127 south of Van Wert and that place has dismal coverage.
