G5 wifi

I have a Roomba i3 vacuum that can be controlled with app. With my old phone and verizon it was fine. Now after updating to T-Mobile 5G wireless WIFI my roomba app says it is not compatible with 5G. Roomba customer service says to have T-Mobile set my WIFI to 2.4 thru G5. How do I get this done?

Joining it to the 2.4GHz radio frequency should allow it to stay in communication over a larger area. You might need to separate the 2.4GHz from the 5GHz with a different SSID than the 5GHz radios. You need to also make sure the authentication for the 2.4GHz is the same for what the Roomba is capable of. If the Roomba only supports WPA or WPA2 authentication then make sure both are configured on the SSID for the 2.4GHz frequency.

if you have the Arcadyan gateway then you will have to use the mobile application to manage it. There should be an option to establish “Separate Networks”. That will allow the 2.4GHz and 5GHz radios to be on different SSIDs. Once that is done then you can join the Roomba to the SSID for the 2.4GHz network. It is pretty much the same as joining any other client to the WI-FI at that point.  If you have a printer that does not play well on the 5GHz then it can also be joined on the 2.4GHz radio and the other SSID. So, in effect you will have two WI-FI networks each with different SSIDs. All clients will join the same wireless ethernet segment so depending upon the client capabilities you select which SSID to join it to the network.

Thanks for your input. I am sorry but I don’t understand anything you said. I am not Tec savvy and I am an 80 year old man and all I want is to flip a switch to make it work.

Well, I can understand that. If you call T-Mobile support and explain your situation I would hope they would make the extra effort to help out a senior citizen.

Just flipping a switch to get the Roomba to connect is not that simple. Your Roomba probably worked just fine with the older Verizon equipment because they were both speaking 2.4G.

Now with the T-Mobile gateway the manner in which it handles the communication with devices it may be trying to direct the communication to the 5G vs 2.4G and the conversation breaks down due to that as the Roomba can only communicate on the 2.4G.

So, the software switch, and a minor configuration change has to be done with the gateway to make that work. If you don’t have the T-Mobile home internet application on your phone that is the first thing you will need.

What you also need is a younger tech oriented person to help you “flip the switch”. Really T-Mobile customer support engineers should be able to handle walking you through such a minor task.

Flipping the switch so to speak:

  1. With a T-Mobile support person, launch the T-Mobile home internet application.
  2. The T-Mobile engineer walks you through the admin login
  3. They walk you through the interface to change flip the switch.
  4. They explain adding the second network name (SSID) and authentication
  5. The configuration is saved.
  6. Next the attempt to join the Roomba to the 2.4G network is done.

The Roomba will still run around the house and clean but you will loose the additional controls without the wireless connection for the Roomba application.

That is the way it should work. I cannot say 100% that the separation of the 2.4G from the 5G radios will allow the Roomba to communicate to your phone again. Based upon others having similar problems that may resolve the problem. The process to make the change is not difficult for a person that understands the application and menu options.

Hey Gov. Things can get really tough when you don’t feel confident in your tech abilities. We do offer resources on our support site including a tutorial with pictures that show you how to do what iTinkeralot is talking about. How to add a guest or secondary network With those steps in front of you, I have full confidence that you would be able to get the 2.4 network created and your Roomba connected to it. If you to want someone to go through it with you, our Team of Experts would be happy to walk through these steps with you if you call in.

Hope this helps!

I am having the same problem with my Roomba i3. How do I go about creating a separate 2.4Ghz for the Sagemcom Fast 5688W Gateway? I have checked the entire user manual and cannot this information anywhere.

Hey @marcocholo Those user manuals have a ton of great information in them so I am glad that you were able to pull it up and look it over. Sorry you didn’t find the information that you were looking for. Updating the networks to separate the frequencies is done through the T-Mobile Internet app. We have a tutorial built on our support site that shows how to make those changes.

  1. Start on our T-Mobile Internet app page
  2. Scroll down to For additional steps, check out T-Mobile Internet app tutorials!
  3. Select Android or Apple
  4. The tutorial you want is under How to change network frequency bands

Hope this helps!!
