Inconsistent/dropping speeds, corrected by restarting gateway. Is external antenna the answer?

Been on TM Home Internet about 6 months. Was great at first, always on, fairly good speeds, much better than our cable which went out all the time. Last couple of months speeds will slow drastically but a reset of the gateway almost always fixes it.  Here’s yesterday’s stats, tested about every 10 minutes.

35.02 down 5.28 up

22.22 down 4.97 up

17.96 down 5.17 up

11.81 down 4.98 up

8.17 down 5.44 up

6.07 down 5.29 up

RESET

26.29 down 1.55 up

21.14 down 1.51 up

etc…

I’ve gotten speeds as fast as 88 mbps and as low as 0.7 mps!!  I get 2-3 bars of poor-good signal strength. Have had my gateway in EVERY corner of the house aimed in all directions. I talked to customer svc. several times and all they can ever say is they are working on the towers in my area which I think is a BS excuse.  No one can explain why my speed will drop over an hour down to 1.58 mps and then as soon as I reboot my gateway it’s suddenly 38 mbps.

I’ve notice my RSRP is always poor my SINR is ALWAYS terrible, usually 2 or 3 but often zero.

What can I do to improve my SINR?  I’ve been watching Youtube and lot of people have success with external antennas.  Like Waveform Mimo 4x4 or Proxicast ones. We live in a geodesic dome and our windows are kind of reflective so I thought maybe that was the interference but I took the gateway outside on two sides of the house and the stats are the same. I’ve had trouble getting an answer from TM on where my tower is.

Would an omnidirectional external antenna help? Does it have to be really high?  I don’t have the means to get on the roof.  I’m ready to build a foil hat for my gateway! HELP!

How many devices does your gateway show connected? A reboot may help because all of those devices would have to reconnect, temporarily allowing for less load on the gateway.

Like you, I wish there was an easy solution for an external antenna. I live in S. Florida and my connection isn't too bad. I always get at least 30 mbps down and often 50 mbps. I have no problem streaming without any latency and at full 4K resolution. While there is 5G in my area, the gateway won't connect to it so, at least for now, I have 4G LTE.

Lastly, there is a ton of software for PCs, Macs, iPhones and Androids which will locate the cell closest to you. Search on “cell towers US”.  Keep in mind that doesn't mean you're logged onto the closest tower, just that it's the closest one to you.

If you have an android phone you can download a network scanner that also recognizes cellular bands not just WiFi bands. If you have the PCI for the 4G And 5G bands your gateway receives you can use CellMapper.net to locate the cells. CellMapper has an Android application which is helpful for tower/cell location. Of course you also need a 5G phone to gain visibility to the 5G band(s). Don’t assume the phone and gateway will use the same cell. They may not.

I don't have a fix ... But can affirm you are not the only one.  I've had TM internet for about 6 months and I experience the same issues.  I can see the tower in the distance and I get solid 4 bars on my gateway. I have my Google nest mesh router hard wired into the gateway with no other devices connected to the gateway.  I can test the speed in/out of the nest router.  I have experienced everything from 100MB+ to 3MB down.  Yesterday I restarted gateway and was running 100MB+.  This morning I'm at 40MB.  Restarted this morning and now running 170MB+.  I just wish TMobile would build in a feature that allows us to schedule gateway restarts to keep it clean.
