IMO they work just as good. You should read the reviews and pick one that you like that has a good rating. I use plenty of open source software that many times is actually better.

AVG offers a free version. Just dont get their browser. Malwarebytes is one of the best. As a IT guy i find what isp companies give u is like a piece of the pie does very little to protect. Just a bunch of bs for non tech ppl.
