Upgraded my phone.  New phone comes with sim card.  Set up instructions on tmobile site say to put old sim in the new phone.  Should I use the old sim or have tmobile activate the new sim card?

T-Mobile (US) does not provide for having two SIMs with the same number. At one time T-Mobile (DE) sold this service under the brand "Zwilling" (Twin).

Could both be active with the same number?

Use the old SIM, save the new one to use as a spare. This is particularly handy if you travel overseas, because if your phone is lost or stolen, T-Mobile won't ship you a replacement SIM overseas.

If the old sim is the same size use the old sim.

I would use the old SIM unless it doesn't fit in the new device.  Keep the new SIM to use if the old SIM ever needs to be replaced.
