If you want to change the email font go into it's settings, etc...
That's a really good suggestion above. Which app are you using? Have you gone into the settings to see if you can change the font?

Bold: Add an asterisk on both ends of the word you want to *bold*
Italic: add underscore on both ends of the word you want to make _italic_
