As I cross international borders I get a text saying I have 5GB free data. Does the data reset for each country or is it 5GB per billing cycle? Is the data still free over 5GB at the slower speed? Does it work with chargeable roaming blocked at the account level? Is the selection of a carrier automatic or Do I need to know which carrier to connect to when driving around in remote areas?

It depends on where you are roaming.  If you are traveling Europe, that 5GB counts for most of it.  I thin Ireland and a couple of other places are exceptions.  The free data after 5GB will be so slow, it won't actually be useful enough to load the most basic text only webpage in about ainute.  The 5GB will reset each billing cycle.

For things like Google Mao's.  You will want to purchase extra international data.  Heavy use on GPS Map apps will still eat through your data very quickly.
