Can I text my friend in Canada with a Canadian phone? I live in America with a American phone and the basic Magenta plan.

The Magenta plan should have texting to Canada for free, not sure if your friends plan has it for free.

Magenta does include Canada and Mexico. However, most Canadian cell providers only have Canada wide texting in their plans. If they don't have unlimited US calling included in their olan, they more than likely don't have US texting included in their plan.

Since Canada is in the NANP, they are addressed just like US numbers. As the others point out, it may cost the Canadian recipient to reply so they may want to do so via an IM app.
True. I text Canada often (and call). While it is free to text Canadians from a T-Mobile Magenta plan (I’ve been doing this since T-Mobile Simple Choice), it may cost Canadians to receive and reply.
Canada has some of the most expensive rates for everything.
