what's up with T-mobile removing autopay discount for credit cards?

We are very much against this autopay change. We prefer using our credit card (mainly for security reasons) but are unhappy that we will now be paying an additional $15/month for intermittent cell phone service. (We have 3 lines.) We live in the foothills of LA, can see downtown LA from our home, but our phone drops calls every day. We keep getting messages that the phone is "searching" and when we attempt to make a call we often get "not on registered network." Many times we don't even get incoming calls and all the messages miraculously appear at the end of the day! It has been a struggle dealing with T-Mobile and we have spent (and continue to spend) hours with them over the poor reception.  We were first customers with Sprint and have had Sprint/T-Mobile for over 20 years. At least Sprint had provided us with a booster that helped somewhat but we do not have that option with T-Mobile.

I’ve been a T-Mobile customer for many years and am not happy with this change. When combined with the obvious deteriorating customer service, poor signal in my area, and history of data breaches, this is incentive enough to switch away from T-Mobile. Very sad…

This is not OK.  Access to bank account and routing information is private.  Also, what stops them from taking any amount and then you have to dispute.  Fraud is a real problem these days.  Why not simply charge the amount of the credit-card fees?  1.7-2.2% which would be less than the $5 per line fee.  Simply making a change like this is fine for T-Mobile, but the customer was promised that the prices would stay the same (not OK to change the terms which changes the price).  In this day and age, privacy and security are paramount.  This is not OK.

In addition to my previous comment:

Since we receive only one bill for our three lines, why is T-Mobile charging us an additional $15.00 ($5/line)? They are only processing one bill for our three lines and this amounts to a 12% increase which is even higher than the current inflation and credit card fees.

Why don't they just reduce the discount a little bit and keep our lives secure.... In a world where theft and dishonesty is on the rise, is it really smart to make your customers who are already trying their best to save a few bucks, to give up their insurance and the safety net for  the money they are working so hard to get. Especially considering the data breaches. I will actually start looking for another carrier after being with Sprint, then T-Mobile for over a decade. I'm hoping that T-Mobile's staff will take out concerns into consideration and come up with a plan B

I switched mine. They'll be mailing me a paper bill (money for paper, envelope, stamp, toner, wear and tear on their printing machines, etc)

Also, I will be watching for a class action lawsuit. If I see it, I'll join. What they've done is illegal.

And then?

Pay by check giving them your bank’s routing code and account number in b&w on that check? Checks sent by mail are actually the most insecure form of payment and often result in late payments.

Pay with cash in-store and give them an additional $5? They now charge $5 for payments at store.

Or continue to pay with credit card?

They’ve got us coming and going on this one.

My choice was to simply open a free checking account with debit card, maintain a minimal balance and pay with that debit card while turning off overdraft features. Most bank debit cards are issued by Visa and MasterCard and carry the same fraud protections as credit cards. In addition they have card controls that can lock down the card, limit transaction amounts and categories. Still get my autopay discount with little to no risk.

So you jumped through hoops to try to best the system. Good for you, for now.

Nah, I am paying the extra $15 for not using autopay, but paying with my CC (as always) and satisfied knowing that TMobile has to pay in other ways.

Whoever made this decision at TMobile should be fired.

Yeah, 5 minutes of my time one time saves me $5 per line each month - big hoop! Hope you’re getting your money’s worth in satisfaction for $15 per month. I know I am for my 5 minute time investment.

Spoken like a true TMobile employee. Thanks for your input "Bob".

No choice but to shop for another provider. Even if we assume TMobile pays the high side at 4%, on an account with 5 lines at $200 a month that means their fees are $8 a month. But this move raises my bill by $25 a month.

This is a price hike, pure and simple.

Let me know how that goes. I was in a local Target and they tried to get me to switch. The asked  me what I was paying with my current carrier and I told him $70 for 2 lines of unlimited talk, text and data. He laughed and said he couldn't touch that price

That was announced months ago.  It is because credit card companies charge a service charge that is based on the percentage of every transaction, which eats into T-Mobile’s revenue.  Removing the auto pay discount for credit cards negates that.

How would you feel if someone wiped out our bank accounts and we sued you for all the money that was stollen. How much would that save you?

Or we stopped using Auto pay all together and had you mail out a statement every month. The credit card is the safest method for all of us. Thieves are everywhere even in your company.

Perhaps switching to a different carrier is what you want instead. Does this help you with profits?

Profits is the only thing this is about.  Perhaps we all should get rid of our cell phones and go back to the way it was. We all pay way too much for our cell phones already.

I would think twice about what you think you are saving.

then keep using your CC card to make your payments..you just wont get the discount..dont see them saying anywhere that you cant use it anymore..you just wont get the auto pay discount.

Ive had T Mobile ever since they bought sprint.   Two data hacks in 1 year.  There is NO way I am giving them my bank account info for direct pay.  I will be dumping them for their money grab

Send me the paper bill until then,   Hello Mint Mobile

You're still going to be giving your money to Tmobile since they're buying Mint.

I agree with you. UNETHICAL BUSINESS PRACTICES. ITS A BAIT AND SWITCH.

LOOKS LIKE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT

Are there ay lawyers out there? I don’ think it is legal to change the rules after you already made an agreement. What about a Class action law suite ??? I have been using my CC since I started with T-mobile in 2022 Feb. Now I will lose my discount. I chatted with them and was told that it is because people will pay with CC, get the discount, then revers the charge, REally? I don’t think that is the case. How can they really expect someone to be forced to use a personal checking account or debit card to receive the discount. I can choose to use my CC but at a cost now of 20.00 a month, this is basically a charge to protect my checking account from being hacked.

let me know if you find one for a class action suit I am ready to sign

Unfortunately in Tmobile's terms and conditions they can change it. Autopay discount is a perk not part of the plan cost.

Maybe. I am not a lawyer. They sell the service price using the autopay discount. The T&C is non-negotiable, making it a contract of adhesion. If a judge finds that it is unconscionable (arguably a heavy lift), then the T&C could be nullified.

Have you read the terms and conditions? Tmobile can change things as they wish and doesn't guarantee coverage.

Your rate plan stays the same, the autopay discount is a perk. No nullifying the terms and conditions just because they changed the terms of autopay.

Tmobile also changed the marketing of their rate plan in reflecting the autopay discount for debit card or bank account only. It's also in the terms and conditions.

Pure greed. Bait and switch. They want me to change but they have been hacked 3 times. I had to change my credit card because of unusual activity after the hack. Jerks

More protection with the credit card. I brought them new customers too. Despicable.

Just un-enroll from autopay.  Let them mail you a paper bill and send them a check for payment.  See what that does to their costs.

looking into it now. Best option so far.

I first thought the text message I received might be a phishing attempt.  So, I logged in to my T-Mo account and it’s interesting that I saw *no* mention of this even when viewing my current Auto Pay settings.  With a bit of news search (and stumbling upon *this* forum) I found it to be legitimate.

Hah!  It seems there might be another reason to push us off of credit card autopay….

(received via FaceBook Messenger)

“I understand not want to provide us with your direct checking account information, but luckily enough, we have an alternate method called the T-Mobile MONEY which is an FDIC-insured, high interest and mobile-first checking account that pays everyone a 2.5% Annual Percentage Yield (APY) on all balances. Find out more about it with this link https://www.t-mobile.com/support/plans-features/t-mobile-money?cmpid=hw_send. I recommend this method in order to keep your bank account under the radar. Let me know how this sounds to you and if you have any questions for me.”

SOUNDS TERRIBLE!  Just another way to get our personal information out in public.

I am extremely disappointed in tmobile. I've been with them since 2002. Short time after the opened up a kiosk in old value City dept store. Over these years I've brought over many many family members friends and just through periodic conversation I'd always praise tmobile with their service. But I must say in the last 5 - 6 years they have completely went away from their original business model and now it's either 1. A money machine that they just keep raising prices more and more. 2. Our data keeps getting hacked. Which I'm starting to think it's not a mystery. Has anybody ever been found? I almost have to believe tmobile is selling our info to the highest bidder to keep afloat  I don't know what to believe anymore. But to ask people to give up even MORE of their credentials like debit card and banking info.is just simply crazy to me. They been hacked 2x in 23 January and April I believe and I've gotten hits on the fishing site with my pH, email and name and address being on malicious site.

Look, tmobile if you want to keep customers happy and with you... This just isn't the way. I'll be paying off my installments end of this month and I'll be going someplace else. For half price. Already struck a deal with them. I've had it with this dance. And it's been a really long one. But it's just time to go.

To those who read this sorry for the rant but it had to be said and expressed on their site as well.

Let me know where you're going for half the price. I would love to pay $35 a month for 2 lines of unlimited talk, text and data for 2 lines with a USA roaming agreement.
