If you're close to a Best Buy go there to upgrade, it's usually cheaper and no upgrade fees and you can still pay with EIP on your Tmobile account.
I just canceled mine through the Paramount + website.

iPhones can't be temporarily unlocked like an android phone can so the phone won't be unlocked until it's paid off.

It shouldn't.
It will show in the Tmobile system that it's paid off if you called in but it takes a while to update on line. I paid off a tracker, called right after to cancel and the rep said I owed nothing.As for the unlock code Tmobile will automatically unlock the phone once all requirements are met and will send you sms letting you know.
Most of mine are screened and flagged as spam with my Pixel 6 and the call never comes through.

It's looks like the last OS upgrade was Pie and not sure about security patch.The battery and cursor could be an issue since it only has 4 gigs of ram.As for connectivity issues it depends on where you live and what bands have been retired in your area. Tmobile is starting to phase out their 2g network which maybe causing an issue if you have weak 4g service.

Call customer support it should still be available. Usually it goes back in the number pool after 60-90 days.
